A New More Socially Conservative Generation

79

By Ms Dee

We have been fighting a cultural war in America for thirty years—one that is judicially created. The judiciary has gone after things like the sanctity of life, the sanctity of marriage, and religious expression on a regular basis.

When victories on these issues are won on the side of Christian values, we rarely hear about it. On the other hand, if there is a court decision that whacks those areas again, we hear about that!

What happens then is that we get a steady diet of news saying that Christian values are losing ground, but we do not hear about the victories. A great example of this is in the area of abortion.

UCLA's annual study

UCLA does a study every year called The College Freshmen. This has been done annually since 1966. This is a survey of over 200,000 college freshmen from over 250 different universities and colleges.

This survey reveals that today we have a greater opposition to abortion among young people than we did even in 1966 when it was illegal. We have more young people who believe in premarital sexual abstinence than we did in 1966.

A more conservative generation

Recent polls on abortion

Currently, recent polls over the last several years have shown a steady increase in the number of Americans who oppose abortions. In fact, right now less than one-fourth of Americans support Roe v Wade and abortion on demand.

This does not mean they want abortion totally ended. It means they oppose abortion on demand—abortion for any reason.

Pro-lifers are older

You would never know that listening to political leaders speaking on TV or listening to what the courts say. You end up thinking that if you are pro-life; you are in a pretty small minority. This is not the case!

What we find is the actual case now is 46% of Americans are pro-life and the most pro-life is the older women citizens. The older the woman the more she is pro-life.

The most pro-life segment of society is women 65 years of age and older.

The Assault on Judeo-Christian Values

Pro-lifers are also younger adults

Do you know what the second largest pro-life group is today? It is women 24 years of age and younger.

It is coming back around to the younger generation. Only 19% of teenagers today support abortion on demand. This next generation is so much stronger than even the current adult generation on pro-life.

This is very significant!

Most conservative in last 40 years

In every social category our young people are more socially conservative than any group in well over 40 years! They are more conservative than their parents, their teachers, etc.

What is happening here?

Majority *feels* like they are the minority

What we have been suffering from is our own lack of involvement. Conservatives in this country have never been in the minority.

For example, over the last 8-10 years the whole issue of creation has been in the national polls. We are led to believe that those who believe in creation or intelligent design have got to be whackos.

Only 10-14% of the nation, however, believes evolution. There is 80-85% who thinks we should have daily voluntary spoken prayer in our schools.

In every category conservatives are not in the minority. We just think we are.

Dee,

This seems like a contradiction, since this generation over shares too much information on Facebook and Twitter.

The only thing I disagree with is spoken prayer in school. If a student want to say a prayer, say it to themself silently. I do no have a problem with prayer, but not out loud.

Ms. Dee! Your hub is right on. Conservatives span the gamut in this nation and are in the majority. It seems to me that the majority is often silent and/or misled. It is time to wake up.

Great hub filled with truth. Voted up, up and away!

Ms Dee,

Thanks for this information. May I share the link on my website at www.thegreatamericanfast.org. I think more people need to know about this. We are not alone despite what we may be led to believe. Of course, if we believe the lie, chances are we won't fight back, making the minority the majority.

Dexter, it does seem the majority is misled and misinformed. Hoping a better informed citizendry increases. Good to have your confirmation that these facts seem right on.

lifegate, I certainly welcome any part in spreading better information and welcome your posting this on your website! It seems misleading the majority is a way of keeping the majority from standing up for common sense principles and values.

Hi American View! Thanks for your read and sharing your view on voiced v silent prayers when at school. It is hard for me to accept the federal government being the one who says who can pray when, but could easily accept the state government deciding in what religious expression is acceptable in the classroom.

Hello, CRG! It is likely that this has to do with domains of informations that are not normally shared on Facebook and Twitter. It is possibly that it is not 'politically correct' to speak up against a minority we are to be more tolerant of. Do you think this might be the case?

I remember years ago reading predictions that a younger generation would reject the liberal attitudes.

Ms, Dee

This is a great discussion. dahoglund has a point. If we go on the premise that the younger generation are more selfish, then they would be more conservative. If they want everything on a silver platter would that not be more liberal? I have seen both situations with young people of today.

As to the other item I do see Facebook rants that are totally off base and inappropriate that attack people of color and other types of minority groups.

What we may be seeing is that young people are just more vocal about their views than we have seen in the past or they are pissed off that we have spent this country into a corner that they must find their way out of.

Your thoughts,

dahoglund, great you brought this up. This does tickle something in my memory, as well. Maybe it goes with the way societies swing from one extreme back the other way as we move from one generation to the next.

Ms Dee, I'm not going to touch this with (as they say) a ten-foot pole. I don't necessarily "disagree" with what you said except in the sense that we don't want the "conservative" base to get too much power just the same as the "liberal" base should not get too much power.

So I guess I touched it afterall, from right out of the independent, moderate, middle, hopefully still the largest segment of our population.

CRG, yes, there are parts of society today who see from the 'entitlement' perspective--what I take you to refer to as those who are more selfish. The baby boomer generation has been seen too as the Me Generation. Yes, could be that the young adult generation of today is more vocal. In the org I work with, I've seen too a mixture of applicants coming; some with the 'entitlement' perspective and others with the desire to give and serve perspective or more responsible. There's a real mixture out there is what I've seen. But the polling data from which this hub article is based shows it is swinging toward the latter perspective, in a conservative values sense.

Hi SubRon! Yes, a sensitive subject. I agree; extremes in any direction gets into too much power, which then corrupts. There's too much of that going around already! Right, the common sense is what I'd call it that we need to keep things in moderation and away from corruption.

"Smells of Political Correctness to me."

I remember a few years ago my mom was looking for Christmas cards and they all said Happy Holidays.

So saying Merry Christmas was considered politically incorrect but it is fine to say Happy Hannukah.

Time for the conservative to speak up and speak loud.

Sueswan, yes, indeed! 'Political correctness' tells us the majority is in the wrong, and so the minority view rules the day. Always good to have your thoughts :)

This is interesting food for thought! I have to agree that there isn't much possitive news when it comes to Christian wins. Thanks for sharing such food for thought on a touchy subject.
